McDowell Lumber Company, Inc. and Smartwood
McDowell Lumber Company, Inc. has always been concerned about the sustainability of forest resources and the protection of the environment, in part because we rely so heavily on a diverse range of high quality timber to produce our lumber. The SmartWood Certification Program represents one more way that McDowell Lumber Company, Inc. can have a positive impact on the protection of our forests.
What is the SmartWood Certification Program?
SmartWood certifies forests and the companies that use the products from these forests. Forest certification means that a team of experts has carefully examined the goals of the forest owners, their written management plans for the forest, logging practices, environmental issues (such as threatened species), communtiy relations, and worker safety. At least once a year, SmartWood re-visits the certified forest or company to make sure the conditions of certification are still being met.
Who sets the certification standards?
SmartWood is accredited by an international agency called the Forest Stewartship Council (FSC). The FSC establishes the standards that all certifiers must follow. SmartWood has a network of regional partners, including the Headwaters Charitable Trust, located in Pennsylvania. Smartwood is a program of the Rainforest Alliance, a non-profit organization with headquarters in New York. SmartWood is the first, oldest, and largest certifier of forests and companies that manufacture forest products.
What will McDowell Lumber Company, Inc. produce that is certified?
Currently, McDowell Lumber Company, Inc. will be purchasing Pennsylvania state forest sales that have been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council as being well-managed, sustainable forest. McDowell Lumber Company, Inc. will be selling certified rough, green lumber, as well as dry kiln wainscot and hardwood flooring to those customers who are requesting it. We would also like to sell rough, green pallets if the market becomes available.
McDowell Lumber Company, Inc. is proud to be one of the first
primary sawmills to offer certified lumber. We encourage our
customers to inquire about the SmartWood certification
program, and help inform others about it. If you have questions
